Meet Artist Melissa Mercer Brown

Melissa Mercer Brown lives on Scenic 30A along the emerald coast of South Walton county Florida where she says the breathtaking landscape and coastline provide a constant source of inspiration.  “The changes in the weather and the effect on the Gulf of Mexico and dunes are a subjects that I long to paint.  I am absorbed and amazed with the beauty and drama of the ocean.  The play of light on the sea, distant horizons, stormy clouds, the coastal lakes and dunes are my constant stimulation.  I, also am inspired by the magnificent oak trees, hammock vegetation and wildflowers along the coastal lakes, bayous and state parks. “ Melissa’s style of painting is often using a lot of texture and translucent layering of washes to capture the changing sea and skies.

When Melissa was younger, she loved to paint and draw.  Her mother noticed her enthusiasm in painting and enrolled her in private painting lessons at age 15.  She continued to paint until life took her away from painting when she graduated from college and embarked into the business Human Resources world.  In 2010, when she moved to Florida with her family, she took up painting again and fell in love with the beauty of the Gulf and land that inspired her to paint again.  She knew that she loved texture so she wanted to incorporate that into her paintings.  “Sometimes, I can get lost in the beauty of our coastal scenery.  I am always thinking of a different way to capture the angle of a scene in order to add interest, depth and meaning when I paint it.  Sometimes the angle might be a direct view of the beach or sometimes it might be a really close up ground angle to capture all of the beautiful wildflowers along the ground.”

Melissa is also the founder, co-owner and jewelry designer of The Salty Sparrow where she creates unique custom one-of-a kind exquisite jewelry at
